Mona was in love with her friend Mohit. Mohit felt the same for Mona. They confessed their feelings to each other and became a couple. All was well for the next 4-5 years. Things began to fall apart for them when Mohit got an overseas job and his behaviour changed towards Mona. Mona could not let go of Mohit as she was very much attached to him. So they continued with their relationship which Mona knew was going nowhere as Mohit had turned indifferent and Mona began to hear stories about his other girlfriends. Mona focussed more on her career but lived in denial about her relationship. This continued for another  6-7 years when finally her mind and body gave up and she suffered an anxiety attack after Mohit refused to commit marriage to her. At last, Mona decided to break up with Mohit. The aftermath of the break up was that Mona was filled with anger and resentment.
Mona was still recovering from her break up when Mihir entered her life. He was her colleague and after spending about a year knowing Mona, he developed feelings for her. Mihir proposed marriage to Mona and she agreed. Mona liked Mihir but she did not love him. She agreed for the marriage because she had no reason to refuse his proposal – he was very gentle with her and seemed to be right in every way. Mona told Mihir about her past with Mohit. Mihir was impressed with her honesty and felt it laid a foundation of trust in their relationship. After a brief period of courtship of about 6 months, Mihir and Mona were married.
It all seemed well for the first 3-4 months until Mihir’s parents came visiting them. In the two weeks that they lived with them Mona was scrutinised with a microscopic view. They left with some feedback for Mihir which was not in favor of Mona. Mihir became harsh with Mona in the next few months. He demanded that she speak to his mother on phone more often and go and live with her. Mona agreed to go to her mother-in-law for a week. In that one week, Mihir’s family spent time telling her things like how they were flooded with marriage proposals for Mihir implying that Mona should consider herself lucky that Mihir chose her. Mona was quite taken aback by this behaviour of her in-laws but she did not tell anything to Mihir after she returned. These incidents further fuelled her anger.
The mother-in-law also pestered Mona to have a baby soon for which she thought she was not ready. A year passed but it seemed to Mona that she was not accepted by her in-laws as a part of the family. When she decided to bring this to Mihir’s notice, he flatly refused that his parents were that kind. This reaction from Mihir distanced Mona from him. Mona had already been through a long winded fruitless relationship and now her marriage was turning sour too as Mihir was not on her side. She was so angry that she wanted to leave the marriage, when she told this to Mihir, he was taken aback. Nobody leaves a marriage for such a trivial reason, he said. They went for marriage counselling sessions and decided to stay together as leaving was not an option for Mihir. Years passed but Mona could not really accept Mihir. The in-laws continued to add fuel to the fire and thus kept them apart. Even after having a baby, Mihir and Mona merely co-existed. It is a pity but even till this day after almost 10 years of marriage, Mihir and Mona are living together only for the sake of their child.
